GOLD Magazine: The Hospitality Business School
A look behind the scenes of EHL
Originally, we were invited to attend the Luxury Forum. However, the day took an unexpected turn — in the best possible way. Instead, we were given a fascinating tour of EHL – The Hospitality University, an institution that has set the benchmark for excellence in international hospitality education for decades.
We not only gained insights into the modern campus, but also into the distinctive philosophy that sets this university apart.
From the moment you step onto the campus, it becomes clear that EHL is far more than a university — it is a school of life for hospitality and management. Professionalism, precision and warmth shape everyday life here, just as much as a spirit of innovation and discipline.
During our campus tour, we met students and faculty members, visited seminar rooms, workshops and training facilities, and even had the opportunity to attend a lecture in Luxury Management. We were particularly impressed by how seamlessly theory and practice are integrated at EHL. Around 80% of the food used in the campus restaurants and cafés — including a Michelin-starred fine dining restaurant — comes from their own production.

In the bakery, pâtisserie, chocolaterie and culinary arts studios, the ingredients are processed and prepared by the students themselves. Even an on-site greenhouse provides fresh herbs and vegetables — a symbol of the sustainable and holistic approach to education.
Another highlight are the sensory classes: here, students learn to taste wines, analyse aromas and craft cocktails with artisanal precision. It is not only about technique, but about developing a deeper understanding of taste and the core elements of hospitality culture. At first glance, EHL’s high standards regarding appearance and professionalism are immediately apparent: business attire is mandatory for all students.
This expectation shapes everyday life and instills a sense of discipline and, above all, respect for others. Furthermore, EHL impresses with a comprehensive range of sports and leisure activities, which form an integral part of its holistic approach. From a fully equipped gym and a swimming pool to tennis courts and numerous clubs, the campus offers everything needed to keep body and mind in balance.

In terms of content, the curriculum extends far beyond traditional hospitality studies. Students are trained in leadership, business development, entrepreneurship and strategic management. Particularly noteworthy is the fact that every student rotates through all service areas during the first year — from reception to the kitchen. This allows them to truly understand what they will later represent as managers or leaders, while developing respect for every role within the organisation. What remains is the impression of a university that not only teaches how to welcome people, but how to translate values, culture and excellence into everyday practice. EHL uniquely combines business expertise, humanity and a passion for hospitality, remaining a true authority in its field.
